Project Profile - Clarke Central High School Reroof

Reroofing a school while it is in session always presents a number of problems, but this one had several extra issues. Asbestos was present in the old roofing system, and the tectum deck was bad in many places and would need to be replaced as the roofing progressed.

In order to help the owner with their budget for this school after the bids were opened, we did a very thorough inspection of the building, making cuts in the old roof in many places in order to determine the extent of the deck replacement. We were able to reduce substantially the dollar figure the owner needed to set aside for new decking, thereby making the project more feasible. The asbestos abatement was also handled by our firm and kept in a non-friable state, also saving the owner the additional expense and potential liability of using a separate abatement firm.

And to reduce the exposure to fumes and noise while school was in session, our employees worked extended hours during the summer recess the complete the major removal and replacement completely. By working with the architect and roofing manufacturer, we were able to substitute some products that would not require exposure to asphalt fumes later in the project as well.

The project lasted over a year due to a large addition to the school, making our final contract close to $900,000.
